Welcome to the Group Analytic Network London (GANLondon) Therapy

We are a network of experienced psychotherapists based in London specialising
in group and individual therapy.

The therapeutic possibilities of groups

Much of the way we think and feel is shaped by our relationships.

We become ourselves through the way we relate to other people.

When we are troubled, it’s often because our relationships and connections with others have caused us some distress. We may have lost our sense of ourselves and of belonging.

Our main focus in GAN London is Group Psychotherapy. This is a specialised form of group therapy (or group analysis), which addresses not only how we see ourselves, but also how others see us. In a safe, confidential space people listen to each other and find ways to talk about what they feel is important.

GAN London has been established since 1984. Nearly 40 years on, the way we live our lives has changed, leading to more demanding and complex interactions.

Group therapy in GANLondon adapts to the diverse nature of people’s lives while attending to their mental health and human struggles such as depression, anxiety, loss and loneliness.

What is group psychotherapy?

Group Psychotherapy is a well-established talking therapy that takes place in confidential carefully selected small groups of about eight people. Group psychotherapy is usually described as a long-term therapy, the first principal is that therapy happens through the development, exploration and deepening of relationships between the group members. This meaningful experience improves the mental health of group members and builds confidence to help make changes for the better in their lives and relationships.

What is individual psychotherapy?

All members of GAN London offer individual therapy as well as group therapy. Individual therapy may be recommended for a variety of reasons such as specific mental health issues and/or life events.

Individual therapy is a one-to-one talking therapy which takes place in a confidential space. During an initial consultation, an agreement is made to meet at the same time and place, and at regular intervals, usually weekly or twice weekly. Details of any trauma related feelings are explored in depth in the relationship with the individual therapist.

GAN London’s approach to therapy

By working together in groups and building on experience our approach adapts to contemporary needs. This includes the offer of on-going longer term therapy.  In order to ensure that groups remain safe and confidential each potential group member first meets with a therapist. This allows the potential group member to discuss their personal needs and establish whether the group would meet those needs. They are then given the opportunity to find a group or therapist to work with.

Our groups are often diverse, with people from different backgrounds and cultures represented. This helps to prompt new ways of thinking about our difficulties and experiences.

GAN London is a network of therapists allowing us to draw on a wide range of professional experience in London and online.

Who are we for?

Are GAN London therapy groups for everyone?

People approach us with a range of mental health and relationship issues some of which are longstanding and others more recent. Often people have mixed feelings about being in groups or talking with strangers about personal difficulties. We find that many people are interested in hearing others’ stories and experiences that they can relate to.

Our groups are open to all adults irrespective of age, social background or culture.

Our clinical approach is adaptable and pragmatic depending on people’s needs.

Our History

Group Therapy (Group Analysis) combines the ideas of psychoanalysis and social theory, which looks at the relationship between the individual and their socio-cultural contexts. Human beings embody differences as well as similarities.  Our approach and philosophy encompasses an understanding and sensitivity to the intersectionality of people’s lives. Learn more about our approach in our book Group Analytic Therapists at Work.
